University of Queensland claims it would lose $6m under ALP

THE University of Queensland would lose up to $6 million next year under a Labor plan to scrap a planned one-quarter increase in HECS fees, vice-chancellor John Hay has said

Professor Hay said the combination of the lost HECS income and an extra 20,000 students nationwide could cost UQ as much as $25 million a year under a Labor government.

"We have drawn up plans for next year on the basis of the new arrangements," Professor Hay said.

"Universities plan years in advance, and over four or five years; without the HECS increases we will be at least $25 million a year worse off, on top of an already tight funding situation that has been worsening for almost two decades."

UQ is one of three Queensland universities which have chosen to increase fees the maximum allowable 25 per cent.

The National Tertiary Education Union, which is campaigning for Labor, will tomorrow launch a series of election advertisements targeting Coalition marginal seats.
