Fraud at University of Southern Queensland
THE debacle over the University of Southern Queensland's new Dubai campus has taken a new turn with the vice-chancellor - who learned about it only through a newspaper advertisement -- now believing it should proceed.
Vice Chancellor Bill Lovegrove said yesterday he had met in Brisbane last week with Australia's Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Noel Campbell, at Mr Campbell's request, and "he was very encouraging about (the Dubai venture)".
The university plans to open the campus this month but the first Professor Lovegrove heard about it was from a newspaper advertisement a fortnight ago.
The university's governing council - which must approve such ventures - did not appear to know either.
In a dramatic turn of events on Friday three senior staff were marched off the campus by security officers while an investigation proceeds.
The matter has been referred to Queensland's Crime and Misconduct Commission.
It is an embarrassing development for USQ, which offers courses in many countries and has won international awards for its distance-education programs.
